Well the Lunar Lion Team at Penn State University are getting ready to do just that! They are competing to win the Google Lunar XPRIZE. The Google Lunar XPRIZE is the largest international incentive based prize of all time and aims to expand lunar exploration. A craft hasn't landed on the moon since 1973. In order to win the $20 million prize, a private company must land their craft safely on the Moon's surface. Then it must travel 500 meters and conduct two "Mooncasts" sending high definition video and panoramic images back to Earth. The Lunar Lion team consists of Penn State students and faculty. And they have been hard at work getting everything ready for their 2015 launch date. A lot of precise calculations and engineering are required for the task. But accomplishing this feat will not only earn them the grand prize (which will be used for Science and Technology scholarships) but will show that you don't need to be a Global Superpower to explore the far reaches of outer space!
